How Cortex decides who to message

What Cortex checks before it messages a member, and why it sometimes sends nothing.

Cortex is the AI that picks which members get a message, what it says, which channel it goes on and when. It decides about one member at a time. For each one it reads the member's history, lists the options, checks your limits and records what happened afterwards.

What it reads

Workouts, classes, payments and pauses since the day the member joined, kept in one timeline that stays up to date.

The options it chooses between

Send a message now, wait and send later, switch to another channel, or send nothing. If it sends, it also picks the words and the channel, and sends close to the time that member usually opens the app.

Four examples

  • Riley, day 2 of a trial, finished the intro workout and set a goal of four workouts a week. Cortex sends an in-app plan for week one the next time Riley opens the app, and holds off on any sales offer.
  • Maya is on a 21-day streak, works out at 7 p.m. and never opens email. Cortex sends a push at 7:12 p.m.
  • Devon has missed five of seven planned days and looked at the cancel page. Cortex waits 22 hours and sends a comeback plan after Devon's next workout, without a discount.
  • Sam has gone nine days without a visit and ignored the last three pushes. Sam has come back after breaks before, so Cortex sends nothing. If Sam is still away on day 14, Cortex sends a win-back.

You can step through these four members on the Cortex page.

The rules it works inside

  • Your team approves the campaigns Cortex suggests. If you turn on autopilot, Cortex runs campaigns toward the goal you choose.
  • Your quiet hours and weekly limit are checked before each send, and Cortex sends less to members who have started ignoring messages.
  • Each decision is saved with a short reason in plain English and the member data it used, so you can see why someone got a message, or why they didn't.
  • Your members' data is used for your app only. It's never used to train AI for another business, and it's never sold.

The same rules are on our security page.
